Breast Cancer Treatments

Breast cancer requires a multimodality treatment approach, and cancer staging is crucial in deciding and scheduling therapies, which are a combination of the below:

Surgery is basically directed to remove lumps and adjacent lymph nodes in the axilla and can be of different types based on the patient's condition. Surgery can be done first or after chemotherapy.

  • Breast Conservation Surgery (BCS) - A preferred form of treatment for breast cancer with removal of cancerous lumps along with axillary lymph node dissection. BCS is always combined with radiation therapy in order to avoid recurrence.
  • Mastectomy - Modified radical mastectomy is the removal of the full breast with axillary lymph nodes, which needs utmost care and expertise. At Thangam, individualised treatment is offered based on the patient needs and condition.
  • Plastic Reconstruction - A multitude of options are available to reconstruct the breast to enhance cosmesis, which includes rotation of tissue, using muscle and skin from nearby areas known as pedicle flap, or can be done as free flap also.
  • Lymphedema - Breast cancer surgery includes removal of axillary lymph nodes, which disrupts the flow of lymph, which can cause swelling and could become severe. Thangam Cancer Center, offers procedures like Lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA), also known as lymphaticovenular anastomosis, is a microsurgical procedure where lymphatic vessels are directly connected to veins, allowing lymph fluid to flow back into the bloodstream. This bypasses damaged or blocked lymphatics, aiding in the treatment of lymphedema.
In Chemotherapy, drugs to treat cancer cells are injected into the body, these drugs have tolerable side effects, and the side effects have been minimized with new forms of chemotherapy drugs with the evolving changes in medical and treatment approaches. Chemotherapy is crucial to contain the cancer cells circulating in the blood. At Thangam, other support services like scalp cooling are offered to reduce the side effects like hair loss.
Brachytherapy is a form of internal radiation therapy that requires experienced hands to provide best outcome with minimal side effects. At Thangam, with the latest technology, for selective cases of breast and sarcoma, duration of radiation therapy can be reduced from 5 weeks to 5 days with the use of Brachytherapy, significantly reducing side effects.
Intense energy usually X-rays or proton radiation is aimed directly at the operated area to kill cancer cells to minimize recurrence. It also helps improve the quality of life by alleviating symptoms. It's an effective treatment, particularly after breast-conserving surgery.
Since breast cancer is hormone-driven it's crucial to assess the hormone receptor status. Depending on the presence or absence of hormones, hormone therapy is offered at the end of the treatment process, to prevent recurrence, slowing or stopping cancer growth, and potentially reducing the risk of developing cancer in the other breast. Sometimes it is used to reduce tumour size pre-surgery.
Similar to hormone receptors, determining the presence of HER2 Neu is essential to plan treatment approaches. Addressing the presence of HER2 Neu with suitable treatments helps to derive the best outcomes.
  • 3D Breast Tomosynthesis / Tomo Mammogram:

Thangam Cancer Center is equipped for tomosynthesis that creates a three-dimensional (3D) image of the breast by capturing multiple images from different angles. Tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography, can improve cancer detection, especially dense breast tissue, and reduce false positives.

Thangam offers Tomosynthesis-guided core biopsy that facilitates tissue diagnosis for mammographic abnormalities seen on mammograms, including asymmetries, focal asymmetries, masses, architectural distortions, and calcifications.

  • MRI for Breast:

MRI is a powerful tool that can detect cancer not visible on conventional imaging. It is used to diagnose breast abnormalities, especially breast cancer, and is often used alongside mammography and ultrasound for a definitive diagnosis.
